Review: Funko Nightmare Before Christmas Mayor

Rarely do I have much to say about smell, but this The Nightmare Before Christmas Mayor has a whiff very similar to the Onell Design Glyos figures. It's hard to miss. The figure itself is neat, but it doesn't ring true to the ReAction aesthetic - that is, a shameless replication of the Star Wars form factor of 1978-1985. His foot pegs holes are even a different size - the end result is a better figure that, while not totally out of place in the line, really just shows that there's a sliding scale as far as authenticity goes on this line.

Review: Funko Nightmare Before Christmas Behemoth

As one of the people lucky enough to be aware of The Nightmare Before Christmas months before anyone saw it thanks to Tomart's Action Figure Digest I was also lucky enough to scope out the toys as they were new. I didn't buy many - I still regret that, but I was also pretty young and unable to find work. So this Behemoth is the first one I've ever owned - and it's pretty great. He feels like a bulky, beefy Kenner figure of old (not unlike a Sise Fromm or a Rancor Keeper) with sculpting and detailing pretty much on the mark. Given the use of puppets, there's really no reason to get it "wrong" as there is a disgustingly large quantity of photos.

Review: Funko Nightmare Before Christmas Sally ReAction Figure

Like any good toy dork, I was keenly aware of The Nightmare Before Christmas months before anyone saw it thanks to Tomart's Action Figure Digest - arguably the best thing you could read in the pre-internet world, just because of how much information it threw at you that you didn't realize you needed to know yet. The movie itself was a wonder, a mix of old-school holiday TV specials for kids with something that is largely hard to find elsewhere, notably that it's thematically older-skewing as it explores themes of failure and one of the worst things that happen to us as we grow up: being forced to examine and acknowledge our limitations. Sally was one of the film's leads, and unlike the film's hero she actually does get to grow more as a person and exceed her creator's intent by going from a sort of a ragdoll/Frankenstein's monster hybrid.

Review: Funko Nightmare Before Christmas Jack Skellington (SDCC Early Bird Figure)

We first got word that there would be three heads on this character, but Funko's Jack Skellington (Early Bird Figure) gave us a fourth - and I suppose technically first - head on this body. The regular retail heads include a smiling, surprised, and devilish head while this convention-exclusive edition sports an open, affable mouth similar to Hasbro's 1993 original.

ReAction Adds NBX Zero, Superman Sloth for SDCC

Funko revealed 2 more SDCC ReAction figures on Twitter last week.  One is Nightmare Before Christmas Jack Skelington with Zero, which will undoubtedly be the variant to chase down this season - three variant heads will ship with the standard release, too.

The other is The Goonies Sloth in Superman t-shirt which should also be a big, big deal.   In theory you can get yours at Comic-Con this week, at Funko's booth.
